The Kurdish Question in Turkey
Okey people, I'm seeing alot of people supporting Kurdish rights and supporting the Kurds in Turkey. Or just accusing The Turkish Army as being Fascistic or cruel and all that sort of bullshit. Now I'm going to tell you the Turkish perspective of the story of Kurds in the Turkish Republic. This is going to be a fucking long text so be prepared.Turkish Commandos fighting |
History of The Kurds in Turkey
Most people hopefully know the history of the Ottoman Empire. The Kurds lived in the Ottoman Empire. Nobody gave a fuck. They just worked there as farmers. After the First World war the Ottoman Empire was defeated. The Allies promised the Kurds an autonomous state and The Ottoman Empire would be seperated by the Allies.
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk
The Kurds were granted a little bit of territory in South-East Anatolia, some of the Kurdish groups sought self-determination and the championing in the Treaty of Sèvres of Kurdish autonomy in the aftermath of World War I, Kemal Atatürk prevented such a result. Strangely enough, it was the Kurds themselves who have worked through the Turkish War of Independence under Ataturk. To making the treaty of Sevres invalid Ataturk has probably promised them the same autonomy, or the idea of living under the yoke of Western, Christian countries was the mostly strict Islamic Kurds so opposed that they have not even negotiated autonomy with the Turks. Well Ataturk screwed it for them in 2 ways.
1) He abolished the Caliphate and turned Turkey into a secular Republic.
2) He created a new Turkish Republic with no autonomy for the Kurds.
Obvious fact that Ataturk has read Machiavelli. Indeed, Machiavelli suggests that once a ruler comes to power, he first has to betray his allies and the links with his former opponents to tighten. The allies will because they have participated in the victory impose stricter requirements and want power, thus they will be dangerous to the ruler. Allies must therefore be broken. The band with former adversaries quote makes sense because they will have to pay / approach because they do not expect it and often ultimately more reliable allies will prove the old allies. Extra thankful The psychological aspect of earlier reports are also playing a role, while the old allies as co-winners will not want to bow to the ruler.
Kurds backed by the United Kingdom declared independence in 1927 and established so-called Republic of Ararat. Turkey suppressed Kurdist revolts in 1925, 1930, and 1937–1938, while Iran did the same in the 1920s to Simko Shikak at Lake Urmia and Jaafar Sultan of Hewraman region who controlled the region between Marivan and north of Halabja. After the establishment of the Republic of Turkey Atatürk ordered to forbid the Kudish language because the Kurds were a threat in his eyes to the Turkish Nation and ordered to assimilate all Kurds in Turkey to be Turkish citizens of Turkey.

The Kurdish Culture was upressed in Turkey, the Kurdish language was illegal until 1992. Kurds were named "Mountain Turks". And everything about "Kurdistan" was censored as if they never had existed. This led to the founding of the Kurdish Workers Party. Under Erdogan Kurds gained extra rights but I will come later on that.
A terorrist organisation with his leader Abdullah Ocalan. Abdullah Ocalan is now in prison after he was captured by Turkish Commandos (with help of the Isrealian Mossad) in a Greek embassy in Kenia.
The Kurdish Workers Party
The PKK or the Kurdish Workers Party was founded by Abdullah Ocalan 1978.
Well the PKK was formerly a "Communist" party who fought for Communism in Turkey along with other Turkish communists, after the military coup in 70' I thought, they started to fight for a communist independent Kurdistan. And the thing that I really find interesting is that many people refer "The Turkish State" to "Fascistic". Well let me tell you something, if you didn't know it but Communism has a far bigger death ratio than Fascism. Think about that before you accuse Turkish Nationalists.
The Kurdish Workers Party or the PKK nowadays say that they're Social Democratic and Kurdish Nationalistic and are fighting for more rights for Kurds in Turkey. Their unarmed wing is the BDP party. They have close ties. Take note, the PKK starts to get more and more Kurdish nationalistic the last years, like some "Grey wolves" see themself superior over Kurds, Kurds start to feel themself more superior over Turks.
The PKK has AK-74, RPG's and other small arms weapons, they use guerillatactics and use the mountains for their advantage. Many of the PKK-members are also women (around 30 percent of them). They are being funded by foreign powers and the Kurdish population.
Their members are around the 10.000 active and 50.000 part-time guerillas.
The PKK kills with the motto:
"If you're not one of us, you're against us." This resulted in killing whole Kurdish families who were suspected by the PKK to be collaborating with the Turkish government.
In the 90' a Kurdish-Turkish Turgut Ozal ordered to arm Kurdish militia to fight the PKK. So you can actually say that Kurdish Turks are between 2 fires, one is the PKK and the other one is the Turkish Army.
In my eyes, both have done cruel things but war is war and there is only 1 truth about war, people kill each other.
Kurds are part of the Indo-European family and are similar to the Persians in Iran.
They live mostly in Tribal society's where their village leader is in charge. This system divides the Kurds. And because they're not divided enough they have different languages which you can compare to Dutch and German. They're also divided because of their religion (Yezidi, Christian, Sunni and Shia) and they're spread around Turkey living mostly in Southeast-Turkey.
You also have 2 different kind of Kurds in Turkey, the Zaza Kurds, who are religious alevi and are divided, most of them are assimilated into the Turkish society.
And now about their oppinions about the Kurdish issue.
What's the main cause of the issue.
Discrimination ?
So actually if they want they can reach high positions.
Is there's discrimination ? well personaly I've never witnessed any discrimination from Turks against Kurds in Turkey.
But there is discrimination mostly from extreme nationalists, and this must stop. To many Kurds have been tortured or put in jail without trail. Ethnical nationalism must stop from both sides.
But such accuses that Turkey is similar to an apartheidstate is complete bullshit.
Socio-Economic Problems
Yes, this is a real big problem and there must be invested in the South-East region of Turkey. With this one I completly agree.
Kudish Nationalism
Kurdish Ethnical nationalist movements must be forbidden. Well, you can allow it, but don't cry if there is a civil war and you lose.
Do the PKK and Abdullah Ocalan represent all kurds in Turkey ?
Well 42 percent thinks not while 38 percent thinks he does, so basicly this means that even the PKK hasn't full support of the Kurdish population.
I personally think (I've spoken with many foreign journalists about this and they say the same thing), that about 20 percent of the Kurds support the PKK, 30 percent of the Kurds support the The Turkish State (the AKP government) and the 50 percent supports the BDP ( the Kurdish political party).
Even their political party hasn't 100 percent support of the Kurds in Turkey.
Are the Kurds proud to be a part of Turkey ?
I don't think that I need to explain this... Let's say 70 percent of the population wants to be a Turkish citizen.

The Turkish Population
Well, let's talk about the Turkish population, what they are, how they live and more.
First of all, Turks aren't Altaic, the most Turks are mixed with other ethnicities like Armenians, Persians, Greeks, Galatians, Arabs and more.
First of all, Turks aren't Altaic, the most Turks are mixed with other ethnicities like Armenians, Persians, Greeks, Galatians, Arabs and more.
J1 is the Altaic one |
So basicly 9 procent of the Turkish population can be considered be "Turkish Altaic". This also means that Ethnic Nationalism is just bullshit. In my eyes everybody who lives in Turkey is a Turk (nationality). The only thing that's Altaic are our forefathers. But let's look what the Turks think about this conflict. You can sort the Turks into 3 different sorts.
-You have left-winged Turks, who are nationalistic, secular and Social democratic. (CHP)
-You have extreme nationalistic Turks like the Grey Wolves (MHP)
-You have non-secular Islamist Turks (AKP)
The left-winged people believe that Kurds can be etnical Kurds and they can be granted extra rights but their nationality must be Turkish.
The Far-Right extreme nationalist Turks believe that everybody who lives in Turkey is Altaic and that everybody has 1 culture.
And the Islamists Turks dream of an Multicultural Ottoman Empire.
So basicly, almost every Turk is against an independent Kurdistan.
But why ?
Because of the fact that the most of the countries supporting the Kurds are "enemies" of the Turkish republic and some of those countries like Greece or Armenia are frustrated with what happened in the First World war and on this way they want to payback Turkey. This is also the reason why we can't find a solution. The most countries never want to listen to the Turkish side of the conflict and the most countries who support the Kurds are mostly (anti) Turkish countries. And I am fucking sick to be called a mass murderer or a fascist just because I'm Turkish. Every time I want to say give my argument on certain topics everybody just says "No, you're Turkish, you're just brainwashed." and all that bullshit like I'm brainwashed by the Turkish state.
This causes suspision in the Turkish population, and the same with me, if you accuse us to be mass murderers without listening to our side of the story get the fuck out ! Coming to a compromis is with dialogue not monologue.
This is why Turks are so nationalistic, Europe always considered Turks as a threat, Armenians see Turks as mass murders, Greeks want their land back, Arabs never had good relationships with Turks because most Turks are secular, Persians hate Turks because of wars in our history, Russia always wanted to expand their influence in the Black sea. Because of this Turks are little bit paranoia.
Myths about Kurdistan
I fucking hate it to see so many lies about Kurds or Kurdistan, so I want to show you some lies retarded fucktards who don't know anything about Turkey always use.
Bullshit maps
Aleppo is Arab.
Central Anatolia is also mixed.
Kirkuk is mixed (Turkmen, Arab and Kurd)
The Iranian map is just fucked up.
If you look closely, it seems like 30 percent of Armenia is Kurdish, while 2 percent of Armenian population is Kurd.
So just whole this map is fucked up.
Turkey needs Iraqi Kurdistan for their oil
Yeah lol.
And to the people who say that Kurds and Turks hate each other,
So stop setting Turks and Kurds against each other.
Kurdish Flag in South-East Turkey
In your dreams.
First Language in South-East Turkey becomes Kurdish
Turkish is more important because of the fact that we live in Turkey, and without speaking proper Turkish Kurds won't get easily jobs and start complaining that they're been discriminated and so on and on.. But this can be possible in the future.
Autonomy for the Kurds
This could be a good idea, but I'm not a really big fan of federalism, I live in belgium and it works like shit here.
So yeah. Autonomy for the Kurds would be good for me, but it not stops there, and also get the Assyrian / Aramaic, Arab villages and neighborhoods, and any other workplace or near a certain degree of autonomy. Turkish / Sunni cultural, linguistic and religious domination replaced by a Kurdish / Sunni domination is just as unfair to the Turkish, Alevi, Yezidi, Assyrian / Aramaic, Armenian, Arabic and Circassian minorities in the Kurdish area. And you're not going to tell me that Kurds don't going to abuse that power.
I assume you're aware of the fact that the Kurdish (Kurmanji and Sorani) to Iranian linguistic group, but that the individual languages and peoples who see themselves as a separate people from the Persians. Just like Dutch or Germans but not Germans. Now it's the case that many Zaza and Gorani also see themselves as separate people from the Kurdish (Sorani and Kurmanj) as Kurds again see themselves as separate people from the Persians. Many Dersim Zaza's so you prefer your own Zazakistan which Alevis safe from persecution of the Sunnis (Turk and Kurd) than they are part of Kurdistan.
By the way, in addition, you must remember that the Assyrians / Arameans are the oldest living population in the region and therefore have prior rights as the Kurds. Kurds (Medes and Persians) are seen from the Assyrians / Arameans as well as occupying Turks are Kurds. What will be their status as Christian minorities in Kurdistan (region is Islamic-conservative)? Would they actually do not have the right to their independent country Assyria?
And as last, what with the Kurds living in Wester-Turkey, what with the Turkish-Kurdish couples ?

This is so incorrect in so many ways, first of all, in the north (Kars), is mostly populated by Turks and Azeris.
Adana is mainly populated by Turks and Arabs.Aleppo is Arab.
Central Anatolia is also mixed.
Kirkuk is mixed (Turkmen, Arab and Kurd)
The Iranian map is just fucked up.

What the Kurds want.
I've searched what they want, so let's look if this is possible.
In your dreams.
First Language in South-East Turkey becomes Kurdish

Independent Kurdistan
the idea that each nation should have its own country to me is an outdated, dangerous and unworkable idea. Take Zionism as an example. How much blood have flood for the establishment for Isreal ? (historical land)
Serbs, Bosnians and Croats are ethnically even one nation with one language, but still could not live together. (religion)
Take the American civil war, political parties against each other. (progressive vs conservative)
Take "Lega Nord", a Fascist Italian party who wants the north of Italy independent because they're richer than the south of Italy. (rich vs poor)
There is always something (religion, language, bearing left or right bearing, big-endian or little-endian) now or in the future, one group of the other will differentiate, that's the reason why I am against every form of seperatism.
And I do not know if you are familiar with the situation in the habitat of the Kurds, but I can tell you that the solution is not as simple as you're proposing it. Even if Turkey is cooperating fully (will never happen) exist between the Kurds (or what is conveniently called Kurds) such big differences that not every group accepts the Kurdish identity. In Turkey and Iraq, there are two big (language) groups. The Kurmanji and Sorani. You also have smaller groups like Zaza and Gorani that linguistically much closer to the Persian stand as Kurdish. It is therefore not surprising that these two groups of supporters of the Shiite subgroups Ahl-e Haqq and Alevi (Qizilbash so) while the rest of the Kurds are Sunnis.
I assume you're aware of the fact that the Kurdish (Kurmanji and Sorani) to Iranian linguistic group, but that the individual languages and peoples who see themselves as a separate people from the Persians. Forbid the political party MHP
This is so fucking retarded, if you want to forbid MHP because they see the Altaic race "better" or they support Pan-Turanism, you must also forbid the Kurdish political party's because of the fact that they also support Pan-Kurdistan. Furthermore, yes it is true that the MHP has an armed wing called "the grey wolves", but the BDP has their PKK so shut the fuck up.

Release Abdullah Ocalan
Never going to happen.
No more ethnical Kurds in the Turkish Army
This is one of the most retarded things I ever heared in my life. If you want a solution for this problem you don't propose retarded ideas, you must find ideas that will work. None other ethnical group is better in Turkey than another. And sometimes I hear thing like "we don't want to be part of the TURKISH army, because of it's name." Well retarded faggot, I'm sorry, really I am.
By the way that was sarcastic, this is one of the retardest proposals I've ever heared in my life.
This stupid idea will also increase discrimination and cause more conflicts between different ethnical groups.
And that's it I thought...
What Erdogan does.
Maybe if you follow the news in Turkey, but Erdogan has reached out his hand to the Kurdish Turks. Is this good news ? Well, to be honest, Erdogan gives no fuck about the Kurds, he just wants more votes. Under his government, it is allowed to give Kurdish in private lessons. What is funny is that before he was elected he said that he will never negotiate with the PKK, now he negotiates with the PKK. So you can see how hypocritical he is. Is there progress ? Well now there is, but only because of the elections in may.
Never going to happen.

Conclusion
First of all, the PKK can get their fucking asses out of Turkey, Kurds must accept that their nationality is Turkish, about their ethnical background I don't care. The language they speak home doesn't matter. They must take distance from Kurdish ethnical Nationalism, like Turks must not support Turkish Ethnic Nationalism.
Ethnicity is an illusion, all races are mixed.

In my eyes, every Turkish citizen is a Turk, I don't care about the fact that he's Christian, Jew, Muslim, Kurd, Alevi, Zaza, Laz, Greek, Azeri, Armenian, gay, straight or whatever. Every Turkish citizen who has a Turkish pasport is a Turk. End discussion, don't like it ? Go complain at Amnesty International.
The economy must be improved in South-East Turkey.
A Kurdish party can be allowed (but no seperatist party), to fight for their rights.
They can speak their own language, they even can get it as second language on schools.
But here we've got another problem, the Kurdish language is not 1 language but there are many dialects. So get some Kurdish teachers together first and make 1 before you start complaining.
They can celebrate their own cultural festives.
They can give their kids Kurdish names.
I as a secular Turk, think the main problem is the fact that 'Türk-Kürt Kardeştir' (Turks-Kurds are brothers) only exists in words, especially among 'ülkücüler' (nationalists). One Turkmen village was attacked in Syria and immediately the Turkish military and politics got involved. How many Kurdish villages were attacked with no Turkish response?
This is why the Kurdish people there either flee to the Islam and become radical Muslim and give their votes to the AKP, or support the PKK and give their vote to the BDP. Because the Islam does offer brothership as long as they are Muslims and behave like Muslims. And the PKK does offer the protection that the Turkish military does not offer as they do to the Turkmens for example.
If the CHP and MHP would start to treat their so called brothers as you would really treat a brother, and if the Turkish military would offer the same protection as the PKK to the Kurds in Syria and Iraq (or even better) the problem would not be this big. This is not a linguistical problem as most people believe ('the right to speak Kurdish'), the linguistical problem is just a symptom. The main problem is the Turks looking at the Kurds like enemies, treating the Kurds as enemies, and when it fits them, calling them brothers.
But every support to the PKK or other seperatist movements must be strictly forbidden.
Thanks for reading.
